Ceremonial unveiling Herbert Mehler - Colonna_4000_16

Neubrandenburg is getting a new work of art: the stainless steel welded and painted work Colonna_4000_16 by sculptor Hebert Mehler is the first colorful sculpture by the artist in a public space, whose works have been installed in numerous locations throughout Germany.

After completion of the first section of the street renovation in Große Wollweberstraße, the four-metre-high work will be unveiled on Saturday, April 25, at 2:00 pm with a small ceremony in the presence of Lord Mayor Nico Klose and the artist Herbert Mehler. On April 25, the art collection invites you to visit the current special and permanent exhibitions free of charge.

With his work Colonna_4000_16, sculptor Herbert Mehler, born in Steinau in 1949, focuses on the column (Italian: colonna), a serving element that has characterized the creation of forms in architecture and art since antiquity. Relieved of its load-bearing function, Mehler has designed it as a biconcave body with regular, pointed folds that rises abruptly from the ground without a base. Despite its size and weight, the turquoise-painted and welded figure appears light, slender and floating. The upper cross-section of the form, which fans out in a star shape with 16 spikes, blends with the cyan of the sky, connecting top and bottom in the same way that the ribbed vaulting in Gothic sacred buildings connects ceilings and pillars. In this way, the steel sculpture Colonna_4000_16, which is also reminiscent of a stylized water fountain, carries or lifts an imaginary arched space that spans a sphere that can only be grasped in thought between the street space, the architecture and the viewers on site.

The steel sculptures by sculptor Herbert Mehler, who now lives and works in Eisingen / GER and Kranidi / GR, allow for many associations, but refuse to be definitively categorized. According to Mehler, every human being carries a canon of archetypal forms within them, and he is on the trail of these with a welding machine and an angle grinder.
