Neubrandenburg - Rereading Iris Dullin-Grund - an outline. Workshop on the occasion of the Day of Architecture with Jenny Krüger, Susanne Lüttich and Diana Lucas-Drogan
Sunday, 28/06/2026 / 02:00 PM - 05:00 PM / Art Collection Neubrandenburg
The workshop reads contradictions of East German urban planning - based on planning documents and photos and on a walk in the Rostocker Viertel, Neubrandenburg.
The cityscape of Neubrandenburg is characterized by ambiguity: Brick Gothic and East German Modernism clash, creating fissures in the city’s acceptance and quality of life.
Within this dynamic, we aim to explore the built environment as a lived and living archive through the practice of walking and reading together. By examining original planning documents and photographs of the urban transformations, we can engage in a collective dialogue to explore planning ideologies as source material. Together with planners, eyewitnesses, and guests, we will decode—through site visits and in conjunction with planning materials—the ideologies, concepts, and references of the planning culture in the last two development areas in Neubrandenburg during the GDR era. The 1980s were marked by initial, sensitive adjustments as well as significant resistance to planning practices. In the Rostock neighborhood, we aim to explore the conflict, the courage, and the sensitivities inherent in planning.
The Rostock Quarter
The infrastructural intervention involving the rerouting of the street necessitated radical plans ranging from demolition to the construction of high-rise towers on Lake Tollense, while simultaneously sparking resistance from residents.
Hoping to have learned from the city’s previous restructuring efforts, resistance from the population grew. Politically, however, the planning department led by Iris Dullin-Grund clung to its dogmas. The second walk explores this ambivalence of the era.
The basis for our collective exploration is an examination of planning documents and photographs, which will be used as material alongside eyewitness accounts during the walk and a subsequent workshop at the Neubrandenburg Art Collection.
