Joe and Angela are married—and going through a marital crisis. Angela’s idea to invite their neighbors, Pina and Hawk, up for dinner is, as expected, met with resistance from the chronically grumpy Joe. Angela is impressed by Pina’s orgasms, which can be heard right through the ceiling and walls. Joe, once a passionate musician and now a listless music teacher, views his neighbors’ sex as a disturbance of the peace. The couple from upstairs present themselves as vibrant alternatives. Pina, a psychiatrist specializing in sex research and known for her therapeutically intrusive approach, is a real challenge for Joe and his wife. Hawk, a former firefighter, explains with gentle matter-of-factness the mechanics of the sex parties that he and Pina attend and host.
