Cinema in the Latücht: STELLA - A LIFE

Germany 2023, Director: Kilian Riedhof, Length: 116 min., FSK: 16
DA: Paula Beer, Jannis Niewöhner, Katja Riemann, Damian Hardung and others.

Blonde Stella grows up in Berlin during the Nazi era. She is the crush of all her classmates, sings in a jazz combo and dreams of a great career. Even when she has to work as a forced laborer in an armaments factory, she still dresses up and goes to trendy clubs. She has nothing to do with the Jewish faith or Jewish culture, she just wants to live her life, be a winner, and preferably shed her Jewish identity.

The biography of the Jewish woman Stella Goldschlag is one of the most delicate stories you can choose for a movie about the Holocaust. During the Nazi era, Stella Goldschlag tracked down other Jews as a "snatcher" and handed them over to the Gestapo. The film explores the question of the extent to which she was a perpetrator or a victim. After the end of the war, Stella has to answer for her actions in court, but she insists on playing the role of victim and denies it.
