A terrible accident sets the movie in motion: a weekend getaway with Laura's boyfriend in a red convertible ends with a crash on a country road and the death of the boyfriend. And then there is this strange woman, a witness to the accident, who lives in an enchanted house right on this road. She takes the confused but otherwise almost uninjured young woman in as a matter of course. Something like a mother-daughter relationship develops, although her husband and son react very strangely to Laura ... The young pianist that Laura turns out to be begins a new life in the deceptive rural idyll, so to speak, in a fantasy that she creates together with the older Betty and then with the help of her family, in which everyone seems to be playing their own game.
