Cinema in the Latücht: DAS LICHT

Cinema in the Latücht: DAS LICHT

Germany 2025, Written & directed by Tom Tykwer, Length: 160 minutes
DA: Tala Al Deen, Lars Eidinger, Nicolette Krevitz and others.

The Engels family is actually doing well: dad Tim is a cool colleague in a baggy look who talks the big talk at an advertising agency. Mother Melina commutes back and forth between Berlin and Nairobi, where she is setting up a theater project for Kenyan children. The 17-year-old twins Jan and Frieda are almost clichés of typical teenagers of our time. Each of them is so preoccupied with themselves that they don't notice the corpse on the floor behind the kitchen table until it's too late. Their Polish cleaning lady Maya died of a heart attack at work. But a new domestic help soon comes into their lives in the form of Framal, a refugee from Syria. And she quickly forms a special bond with each individual family member.

Tykwer's ambition to tell something about the present, about Berlin, about Germany today, can be felt in every scene of the film. As he once did in "Run Lola Run", he captures the city of Berlin with a unique feel for the locations that you won't see anywhere else with such authenticity. The sympathetic openness of the film, with which things are not explained from a know-it-all point of view, but are experienced on the side of the characters, solicits indulgence and understanding for each of them. Tykwer has created a tremendously atmospheric piece of cinema!
