Cinema in the Latücht: POISON - A LOVE STORY

Luxembourg/Netherlands/Germany 2024, Director: Desiree Nosbusch, Length: 90 minutes
DA: Tim Roth, Trine Dyholm, Charlotte Sieling and others.

Edith and Lucas were happily married for a long time, but when their son died in a car accident ten years ago, their marriage fell apart. After years of not hearing from each other, a grave-laying ceremony brings them together again at the cemetery. Very slowly, a dialog develops in which their past unfolds and all the pain and unsaid things come to light. Lucas left Edith from one day to the next in order to leave his grief behind. Was this a legitimate outburst or a reckless, selfish move? Was Edith really too stuck in her grief? The film lets the points of view clash with all their ambivalences.

The play "Poison - A Marriage Story" by Lot Vehemans, whose productions were designed as a classic chamber play without scene changes, served as a model for the film. Nosbusch follows this concentration but has to add a visual language appropriate to the medium. And cinematographer Judith Kaufmann captures impressive images of the cemetery and its surroundings. The weather takes on a special significance, changing in the course of the film from cold and wet to pouring rain and finally soft warm rays of sunshine, creating an unmistakable atmosphere.
