In her third feature film, Gia Coppola recounts the final chapter in the career of a showgirl in Las Vegas, played by Pamela Anderson
USA 2024 , Director: Gia Coppola, Length: 89 minutes
DA: Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kiernan Shipka, Dave Bautista and others.
Coppola's film tells the final chapter in the career of a dancer who has been exposing herself to audiences for 30 years, but classifies the show "The Razzle Dazzle" as an artistic performance: with Parisian roots, the Revue Theater Lido sends its regards. The beginning of the film is breathless. The camera
moves as if in a frenzy, rushing from frame to frame to record the backstage chaos before the show begins. The movie comes to rest for the first time when things get personal in the circle of friends and the biographies of the characters are outlined. Shelly has a grown-up daughter who is estranged from her; Annette has given up dancing and now works as a waitress in a casino; Judi is at the beginning of her Las Vegas career, her future uncertain. When the taciturn producer Eddie announces the imminent end of the show, it hits the assembled women with full force.
Shelly's life is nourished by illusions, by the happiness of being "seen" on stage. Her illustrated dream world is threatened by the fear of disappearing at 57, as it were. Anderson paints a nuanced picture of a contradictory woman, often in close-up: self-centered and empathetic, accessible and dismissive, charming and aggressive. Contact with her daughter Hannah painfully confronts her with past decisions and long-rehearsed life lies. Many shots in the film appear like photos with blurred edges, reflecting a changeable, uncertain world without clearly defined boundaries. The characters move through it like battered fighters.
