One of the last DEFA productions before the fall of the Berlin Wall became a crowd favorite upon its theatrical release—receiving spontaneous applause and standing ovations. A comedy that was unprecedented for its time in its open criticism of everyday life in the GDR.

Frank and Kamminke, computer science students in Leipzig, have jointly developed an innovative computer program—one that finds and corrects errors in its own software. When the employment agency threatens to separate the best friends after they graduate, they react with an incredibly rash act: they destroy a high-performance computer at the university. As a condition of their probation, both are transferred together to the Thuringian countryside, to a factory in the small town of Finsterberg-Dodeleben. There, a brand-new computer system sits idle—because the necessary software is missing. Of all people, Frank and Kamminke are barred from entering the facility. With the help of the quick-witted clerk Petra—with whom they both promptly fall in love—they nevertheless manage to break into the computer center.
