DEFA film series in the Latücht: THE ADVENTURES OF WERNER HOLT

GDR 1965, Director: Joachim Kunert, Screenplay: Joachim Kuhnert / Claus Küchenmeister (based on the novel by Dieter Noll), Length: 165 minutes,
DA: Klaus-Peter Thiele, Manfred Karge, Arno Wyzniewski, Günter Junghans a.o.

Werner Holt and Gilbert Wolzow have been friends since their school days. Still half children, in the spring of 1945 they lie in a position in eastern Germany, which they are supposed to defend against the advancing Red Army. Wolzow has seized command and orders radio operator Holt to establish contact with the regiment. While on the radio, he recalls the decisive stages of his life: the beginning of his friendship with Wolzow, the joint report to the military, the first encounter with death, the erotic experience with an SS officer's wife. At that time, he lacked understanding for his father's humanistic attitude. Slowly, however, his attitude changed.

A good 10 years after the founding of the GDR and four years after the construction of the Wall, films like this one were supposed to prove to the population that the GDR was legitimized out of anti-fascism and was on the side of the "good guys" in the Cold War, shoulder to shoulder with the Soviet Union. The film deviates from the novel several times in the interest of streamlining the plot. What is serious is that at the end Holt does not fight against the Americans and gets into captivity, as in Noll, but against the Soviet army.

Our club member Rüdiger Weber will introduce the film. After the screening, we offer a casual conversation on the film theme over a glass of wine or beer
