Cinema in the Latücht: FRANZ K.

Turkey 2025, Written & directed by Agnieszka Holland, Length: 127 minutes
DA: Idan Weiss, Peter Kurth, Karel Dobry, Stanislav Majer

One day, Franz Kafka appears at the telegraph office to deliver a dispatch to his lover Melina. He has written a long, wordy explanation in which he apologizes for not being able to make the journey to her. The official, who is a stickler for economy, cuts the text down to a random "can't come". Kafka finds himself in a situation that the author could have made up himself: the miniature of an intimidating bureaucracy. Holland and Epstein pack everything you can think of about this figure into their Kafka film. They review significant stages of his childhood, youth and adult life, in which his father takes on the role of nemesis; they visualize scenes from his work, have companions speak into the camera in various attempts at exploration; briefly recapitulate the fate of his Jewish family members and that of his friend Max Brod during the Nazi era; and finally look ahead to his post-fame (which takes bizarre turns in the Kafka Museum in Prague)
