Ron Howard films the "Galapagos Affair": three groups of dropouts make life difficult for each other in the supposed paradise in the 1930s
USA 2024, Director: Ron Howard, Length: 129 minutes
DA: Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl
These people really existed. Whether they behaved the way Ron Howard shows in "Eden" is another matter. There was the Berlin doctor Friedrich Adolf Ritter, who tried his hand at being a philosopher and dropout, and the woman at his side, Dore Koerwien, who suffered from multiple sclerosis. Then came the family from Cologne, Heinz and Margret Widmer with their son Harry, who was suffering from lung disease; and finally the Austrian Baroness Eloise Wehrborn de Wagner-Bousquet (who was a high-flyer) arrived with her two German lovers Rudolf and Rupert. Their plan was to build a luxury resort. You would think that the people gathered on the Galapagos island of Floreana would come to an agreement and, pulling together, bring the alternative lifestyle they all dream of to fruition. But far from it. Cain and Abel are poor orphans against the viper breed, which is always only concerned with its own interests and now positions itself against each other.
While Jude Law and Vanessa Kirby as the pioneering couple and Daniel Brühl and Sidney Sweeney as Mr. and Mrs. Wittmer stick to the classic character portrait and act with finesse, Ana de Armas takes the cake and presents her baroness as a melodramatic character whose wickedness knows no bounds. Ultimately, the viewer is left wondering what chances of survival post-apocalyptic humanity actually has if these few hobos can't get their act together. The film can therefore be seen as a highly topical contribution to the constantly overheating present.
