Turkish-German director Akin has repeatedly explored the experiences of emigrants, which he himself experienced in Hamburg as the son of Turkish immigrants. Hanning, the little hero of his latest film, is also insulted by the Amrum islanders shortly before the end of the war as a "mainlander"
, on the same level as the refugees from Silesia and East Prussia. Nobody cares that his family has been rooted in the island's history and the tradition of whaling for nine generations. Hanning's heavily pregnant mother and his two siblings fled the chaos of the war from Hamburg to the island. On Amrum, the war seems a long way off and the idyll of the island is largely untouched.
