When the giant claw bites through the steel of the ship’s hull like a can opener through a can, you can’t help but feel it as you watch. You witness the demise of a ship that proudly sailed the seas for decades. Rostock-based filmmaker Tom Fröhlich focuses on the former GDR deep-sea fishing fleet, which included over 100 ships in its heyday. After the political upheaval, they were all either sold or immediately scrapped. Fröhlich tracked down four of them that found new owners. Anchored in the Port of Hamburg is the “Stubnitz,” an 80-meter-long refrigerated cargo ship built by the Volkswerft Stralsund shipyard. In 1990, a collective of artists converted the “Stubnitz” into a floating cultural center. Photos from that time show young people dancing joyfully. The stories surrounding the ships and their crews vary widely. Readers are particularly intrigued by the story of the ocean-going cutter “See Fuchs,” which an engineer saved from being scrapped in 1993. Twenty-four years later, the amateur sailor sold the cutter to an NGO, which deployed the ship for sea rescue operations in the Mediterranean. Shortly thereafter, the Spanish Guardia Civil took the ship out of service due to drug smuggling.
