Oscar-winning director Paweł Pawlikowski follows writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika on a journey through postwar Germany
Eight years after his last film, “Cold War,” Polish Oscar-winning director Paweł Pawlikowski follows writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika on a journey through postwar Germany—in a bold, intense narrative.
Poland/France/Germany 2026, Director: Paweł Pawlikowski, Runtime: 82 minutes
Cast: Sandra Hüller, Hanns Zischler, August Diehl, Anna Madeley, Devid Striesow, and others.
When Thomas Mann pulls up in front of his hotel in Frankfurt with his daughter Erika in the summer of 1949, a crowd awaits him. There is applause, but also plenty of boos for the German writer—arguably the most famous at the time and honored with the Nobel Prize. It is Mann’s first trip to Germany, which he had left in exile in 1933, and he still lives in the U.S. with part of his family. On the occasion of Goethe’s 200th birthday, Mann is to receive the Goethe Prize from the City of Frankfurt am Main in the Federal Republic of Germany. He will then travel on to Weimar to accept the Goethe National Prize, created specifically for him. His journey thus takes him into the Soviet occupation zone. Not everyone in the Federal Republic of Germany welcomes Mann; even at the press conference, the question arises as to whether he views his emigration as a betrayal of Germany. And in the Soviet Occupation Zone, the head of the Cultural Association, Johannes R. Becher, attempts to co-opt him for the political agenda of what would later become the GDR.
