With a magnificently gentle Michel Piccoli, whose Cardinal Melville radiates as much vulnerability as dignity, Nanni Moretti (2001: 'My Son's Room', 2006: 'The Italian') shows us the head of the Catholic Church from a completely unfamiliar side: the human side. His pope, who doesn't want to be one, makes the world stand still for a moment and demonstrates - not without gentle irony - how much strength and courage it takes to face a great task with humility and doubt instead of obsession with power and pragmatism. A touching and tender, thought-provoking and at the same time irresistibly funny film that became a sensational success in Italy.
God and the world have chosen him. But his inner voice tells him that they are wrong. The story of the Pope who doesn't want to be Pope: the church bells ring, white smoke rises into the sky and thousands upon thousands wait in joyful anticipation in the square in front of St. Peter's Basilica. But Cardinal Melville (Michel Piccoli) is panicking. He has been elected pope. What is he supposed to do? He can't show himself to the world - and he doesn't. Soon the whole world is worried, while the Vatican desperately searches for solutions. Just like the Pope himself, but in his own way: he escapes...
