The Steppenwolf

The Steppenwolf

The Steppenwolf is one of the great works of world literature and became a cult book in the 1960s at the latest, which continues to fascinate today and, more importantly, remains timelessly topical. The novel was one of the main reasons why German-born Hermann Hesse was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946.
The focus is on Harry Haller, the brooding scholar, and the prostitute Hermine, who perceives herself as his spiritual sister and also knows doubt and self-hatred, but celebrates life in the process and allows Harry to rediscover his sensuality. The Magic Theater has become a literary place of longing for many seekers of meaning and allows Harry to learn not to take himself so seriously. He learns this from his revered idols Goethe and Mozart, of all people!
The opera Der Steppenwolf premiered in Würzburg in 2016 to rapturous applause and almost always sold-out performances. The revised version will be staged in Rostock - Vera Nemirova, one of the great directors in music theater, is enthusiastic about this opera and will return to the Volkstheater once again.
