Take part in one of the public guided tours of the Waldbau concentration camp memorial site.
During the Second World War, Neubrandenburg was home to the largest subcamp of the Ravensbrück concentration camp - with around 7,000 girls and women from all over Europe. They had to perform forced labor in Neubrandenburg's armaments industry. The prison conditions were catastrophic. Slave labor, disease, hunger and violence cost many prisoners their lives.
The first concentration camp prisoners arrived in Neubrandenburg in March 1943. The barracks were located in the Ihlenfeld suburb near the city center. Planning for a second site began in the fall of 1943. This was built semi-underground in a wooded area on the country road to Neustrelitz in order to be better protected from Allied bombing raids. Due to its location, the site was given the code name "Waldbau".
While the first site in Ihlenfelder Vorstadt has been built over, a visit to the Neubrandenburg-Waldbau concentration camp memorial site still provides interested visitors with an insight into its history.

Registration is not necessary.
A visit to the Waldbau concentration camp memorial site is only possible as part of a guided tour. This is not possible in the event of forest fires, storms and extreme weather conditions.
