With subtle humor and clever choices, Rötzer creates the Berghof as a microcosm of a society reeling from the war - such as the heated debates between humanist Settembrini and cynic Naphta, the unfulfilled passion for the enigmatic Madame Chauchat, the mysterious sessions with Dr. Krokowski.
