The restaurant kitchen in the film "La Cocina" looks like a battlefield, with a huge brigade of chefs constantly firing out plates that are brought to the tables by a host of uniformed waitresses. The restaurant is located in New York's Times Square, bears the generic name "Grill" and serves guests standards such as burgers, steak and chicken masala. But it is less about the food than about the cuisine as a multi-ethnic microcosm, as a mirror of a society. Only gradually does the love affair between an American waitress and an illegal Mexican cook emerge as a narrative focal point from the description of everyday life in the kitchen.
